Maitake is nicknamed the “dancing mushroom”. Why? Legend has it that finding this very rare mushroom was so exciting that it made the pickers dance. In the Japanese medical tradition it is used as a general tonic and rejuvenator.

The secret of this fungus is the wealth of β-glucans it produces. These are major active substances, from the polysaccharide family. Beta glucans from Grifola frondosa were approved in China in 2010 as adjuvants in the treatment of proliferative disorders 1 . Maitake appears to act on the immune system by activating macrophages, T cells and NK (natural killer) cells 2 . A 2017 study suggests the ability of this medicinal mushroom to induce apoptosis of cells that have undergone mutations in the mammary gland 3 . In 2021, another study highlights the process of apoptosis and autophagy, triggered by beta glucans from Maitake, on liver mutant cells 4 . Another paper highlights the improvement of the general condition of chemotherapy patients, due to the synergy 5 that Shiitake has with the standard medication specific to neoplasias. Maitake has also been studied in relation to female fertility, in the case of polycystic ovaries correlated with increased insulin resistance 6 . Maitake, through its complex composition, could also influence blood sugar levels and glucose tolerance 7 . It could also control the degree of cellular fat accumulation and even body mass 8 . The “dancing mushroom” appears to be more active when administered as an extract + pulvis 9 and potentiated by certain whole essential oils.
